Intertwined II: A Contemporary Fibers Exhibit

June 13 – August 2, 2024
Opening Reception: Thursday, June 13, 5:30 – 7:30 pm
Intertwined II: A Contemporary Fibers Exhibit is a dual exhibition coming this summer! Two of our galleries will feature the work of fiber artists Martina Celerin, Constance Collins, Anne McKenzie Nickolson, and Daren Redman. The third gallery will be open to artisans whose exhibit submissions reflect a wide range of works related to the fiber medium. The goal of the exhibition is to include innovative work rooted in traditional fiber materials, structure, processes, and history, as well as art that explores unexpected relationships between fiber and other creative disciplines.

GUILKEY & GRANDE ROOM GALLERIES

MARTINA CELERIN
Bloomington

My inspiration is drawn from both nature and my imagination; some pieces are scenes taken from memories of family walks or places I have visited. Others are much more abstract, capturing an idea, a personality or simply reflect the feelings evoked by an event or geographical area. All of the pieces, though, are true weavings, integrating the materials, landscapes or emotions I’ve drawn from my travels and experiences.

Bio & Statement

CONSTANCE COLLINS
Indianapolis

My artwork is created by upcycling fabric swatches from my wearable warps. I use fabrics as other artists use paints or inks, combining different patterns and colors into a kaleidoscopic piece. Several of my collages are inspired by mu concern for our planet’s health, something that the fashion industry has been guilty of damaging for quite awhile. Others reflect elements of nature or everyday life images.

Bio & Statement

ANNE MCKENZIE NICKOLSON
Indianapolis

All of my artwork from the past 35 years explores the relationship between the textile surface and pictorial illusion. Over the years, I have made several distinct bodies of work which all have certain concepts in common: an innovative use of techniques to create imagery, a commitment to craftsmanship and the beautiful object, and a search for a magical viewing experience – for both myself and the viewer.

Bio & Statement

DAREN REDMAN
Nashville

I retell your story, my story, or the earth’s story in a contemporary textile art form. Whether you desire to experience one of these stories as art on your wall, or as a quilt to wrap yourself up in, I custom dye the material to embody these reflections. Or, if you have a photograph capturing the moment you want retold, I love using it as inspiration for designing the motif or the abstract composition.

Entries Due: In-Person Artwork Drop Off at Minnetrista October 8 & 9; 10 a.m.– 5 p.m
Opening Reception: Opening Reception & Awards Ceremony at Anderson Museum of Art November 3; 5–8 p.m.
Exhibition Dates: November 4, 2023 – January 7. 2024

Since 2001, Open Space: Art About the Land, an annual art competition and exhibition, has encouraged Indiana artists to derive creative inspiration from the land and recognized new artistic creations that celebrate the notion of “open space” as it relates to the land.
Reimagined this year as an “art trail,” this exhibition will be opened simultaneously as two sister exhibitions across East Central Indiana: at Minnetrista Museum & Gardens and the Anderson Museum of Art. Developed by the two museums in partnership with Red-tail Land Conservancy, a portion of the event’s proceeds will benefit Red-tail’s work to preserve and restore vital wildlife habitats and natural beauty.

April 2, 2023 – May 27, 2023

Spring is officially here! Don’t miss out on this colorful exhibit Technicolor Dreams: Art by  Lynette K. Waters-Whitesell & Jennifer Hoard.

OPENING RECEPTION

Join us on April 2nd at 2:00 pm alongside the 42nd IN-Focus.

LYNETTE K. WATERS-WHITESELL

Born in 1973, Lynette was raised and continues to reside in Hartford City, Indiana, with her husband and two smushy-faced dogs: Argo Eames, a boxer, and Agnes Frida Ball, an English bulldog. Lyn, as she’s more casually known, graduated Summa Cum Laude from Ball State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. For nearly two decades Lyn has worked as a creative director in visual communication with known work for brands like Red Gold, Ball State University, and many more. Since 2005, Lyn has exhibited her fine artwork regionally, nationally, and internationally.

“I embrace color and push society’s ingrained connotations. I enjoy challenging normal emotions of sad colors, happy subject matter, and vice versa. I crave intense hues, heavy pigments, and screaming color — juxtaposed with ephemera from yesteryear and digital transfers made from old black-and-white photos from the early to mid-1900s. I tackle society’s skew on women’s roles and domestic and child abuse issues. I use a layering method — in mixed media — which results in an alluring interplay of contrasting colors and intriguing textures to guide the eyes of the viewer through a playground of media. I aim to achieve sharp, bold images with skewed and secretive interpretations underlined on the substrate. Every inch of the work becomes a cacophony of colors.”

JENNIFER HOARD

Born in 1987, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Jennifer grew up in the suburbs of Indianapolis’ north side. Her interest in art evolved naturally out of a childhood love of imaginative creations. From an early age she knew that she was going to be an artist. Jennifer attended Indiana University and obtained a BFA in drawing and painting in 2011. She currently lives in Indianapolis with her husband and their two dogs.

“My work is primarily an endeavor to explore and recreate the shape and experience of dreams. I have always been fascinated with the way that dreams project the laws of reality in a contorted and inconsistent manner. Down can be up, small can be big, and free falling can be standing perfectly still. In a process that evolved from many years of making collages from cut up magazine images, I try to apply the warped rules of dreams to enlarge or oddly juxtapose images against each other to find out if I can make the mundane realities of the real world more exciting. Sometimes, I wonder if looking at something from odd angles will somehow reveal its secrets. I wonder what I can learn about something when I steal it from its native environment and put it in a place it doesn’t belong.”
