Act 3 of Sugawara featuring actor Arashi Kichisaburo as Matsuomaru
Print
Color woodcut on medium/heavy weight rice paper depicting a Japanese actor in the central foreground. The man is dressed in colorful traditional costume of blue ballooning knickers, red robe with blue design and gold stripes, with white cape with black geometric design. The white cape is also embossed with a crossed screen-like texture. The figure is turned one quarter to the right with his head looking left. The figure is holding a pole with a white flag attached. In the middle ground is a river or lake with a shoreline and trees beyond, and large gray mountains behind that. Above is blue sky. To the right of the figure in the upper half of the composition is a vertical red shape with black Japanese characters in it, and to the left of the figure are two vertical shapes, one red and one yellow also with characters written on them. To the lower left of the figure are two black Japanese characters and a red stamped symbol below. In the lower right corner are three other stamped red characters. These presumably are a signature or other identification of some kind.
